Scrimshaw - La Amistad
The motif provided is the 19th century schooner, La Amistad, which gained international attention in 1841 in a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. A Slave revolt by African captives landed the ship off the coast of Long Island, NY where it was captured by the USS Washington. The ensuing trial became a symbol in a movement to abolish slavery.
